After one year of study, MA students are prepared to integrate design into their native disciplines. Or, they may apply to continue their studies through the MPS or MDes program. For nearly a century, the School of Design at CMU has advanced the study of the discipline and offered hands-on learning experiences that have firmly established the School as a leader in design education. One of the oldest design programs in North America, the School of Design attracts students from all over the world, with a variety of backgrounds and interests, creating a rich and diverse learning environment.
Design for Learning Minor Requirements
The School of Design is among the oldest and most respected design programs in North America and one of the only leading design programs to offer degrees at the undergraduate, graduate and doctoral levels within a top-ranked multidisciplinary research university. Our students are part of a diverse, intellectually rich community pursuing Undergraduate design degrees in Communications, Products or Environments; Masters' degrees in Design for Interactions; and PhDs in the emerging field of Transition Design. Our MDes program spans four semesters over two years, and many of our students pursue internships during the summer months while completing their studies. Whether working for a corporate leader, lending a hand to non-profit efforts, or engaging in academic research, students frequently report that internship experiences enrich their graduate education and provide direction for the next steps they will take as alumni. We encourage you to leverage the vast connections of our faculty as you seek these opportunities. In addition, the School of Design invites you to participate in Confluence, our annual career event held each spring to support students in their internship and employment searches.

The Greek tradition at Carnegie Mellon began over 100 years ago with the founding of the first fraternity on campus, Theta Xi, in 1912. The Panhellenic sorority community was founded in 1945, by Chi Omega, Delta Delta Delta, Delta Gamma, Kappa Alpha Theta, and Kappa Kappa Gamma. The Chi Omega chapter at Carnegie Mellon transformed into an independent sorority, Zeta Psi Sigma, and has since become Alpha Chi Omega.
Design for Learning
Whatever direction you choose in your studies here, our approach prepares you for top jobs in leading companies and organizations today—while teaching you to design with future generations in mind. Undergraduate design majors at Carnegie Mellon earn a Bachelor of Design degree (BDes). The degree is equivalent in rank to a Bachelor of Fine Art (BFA), but conveys the growing importance of design disciplines as separate and distinct from fine art. When you start out as a working professional, you may want to concentrate in a single area or, with expertise gained from practice or advanced education, work across broad areas of design.

Within the past two decades, the university has built a new university center (Cohon University Center), theater and drama building (Purnell Center for the Arts), business school building (Tepper School of Business), and several dormitories. Baker Hall was renovated in the early 2000s, and new chemistry labs were established in Doherty Hall soon after. Several computer science buildings, such as Newell-Simon Hall, also were established, renovated or renamed in the early 2000s.
Two Teams of Design Master's Students Win Muse Awards
Students study how design functions at various levels of scale and degrees of complexity situated in specific contexts. They design products, communications, and environments that function as cohesive systems that live within the built and social worlds. Rather than shy away from ill-defined situations, our graduate programs face them head-on. As a student, you’ll learn how to work comfortably among existing uncertainties.
We believe the work of designers is essential to help address the escalating business, social, and environmental challenges we face in the 21st century. In response to the demands of our rapidly changing world, design for interactions reaches beyond form and basic function. Instead, it holistically considers the quality of design-mediated interactions among people, systems, and the built and natural worlds with the goal to leverage opportunities and help solve complex problems facing humanity. A team of School of Design seniors recently launched Lemon, a student-run publication that aims to showcase student work ranging from fine arts, performance, music, design, architecture and literature.
The CSS Working Group has not discussed how the syntax for a separate Masonry display type would work, but perhaps it would be patterned after Multicolumn layout. Hopefully you can see the advantages of fully combining a mechanism for masonry/waterfall layouts with CSS Grid — providing many more creative possibilities than masonry alone. Instead of listing the painting’s metadata in a single left-aligned column, let’s see how we might better use the available space. By using subgrid, we can put the year and catalog number on the right of each card — and line up this data for one painting with the same data for the other paintings.
By adding the ability to pack content in a masonry/waterfall pattern to CSS Grid, we maintain the full power of Grid for defining our columns in whichever manner we like. To show why we at Apple believe this capability should be part of CSS Grid, we created four demonstrations. View these demos in a browser that supports Grid Level 3 — currently Safari Technology Preview or Firefox after you’ve turned on the feature flag.
This cutting-edge digital fabrication facility includes a large-scale flexible space featuring two industrial robot arms capable of supporting subtractive, additive, and transformative processes at significant scale. The MAAD design studios and required courses make extensive use of this facility. Full-time students are required to enroll for a minimum of 36 units per semester, with 45 units required for expected degree progress (typically five courses per semester).
The period starting with the construction of the Hall of the Arts building (former home of the Graduate School of Industrial Administration) in 1952 and ending with Wean Hall in 1971 saw the institutional change from Carnegie Institute of Technology to Carnegie Mellon University. New facilities were needed to respond to the university's growing national reputation in artificial intelligence, business, robotics and the arts. In addition, an expanding student population demanded improved facilities for student life, athletics and libraries. The campus finally expanded to Forbes Avenue from its original land along Schenley Park. IDeATe collaborates with the Entertainment Technology Center to offer an undergraduate minor in Game Design, which is open to students from any major.
It houses everything from dedicated 3D printing and robotics labs to a cafe, all organized around a central core. Flexible floorplates allow for a variety of configurations, from single-height classrooms to double-height studios. A fire-resistant spiral staircase provides a unique pathway and encourages chance encounters, further sparking creativity.
Jiyeon Chun, a senior specializing in Product Design at Carnegie Mellon University’s School of Design, recently won the 2024 IDSA Merit Awards. Each year, IDSA student chapters across the US nominate one undergraduate senior who exemplifies excellence within the industrial design field. Representing Carnegie Mellon, Jiyeon will compete at the IDSA district level for national recognition. Seniors Catherine Liu, John Henley and Georgia Miller were also recognized for their product design work. Two teams of graduate design students from Carnegie Mellon University's School of Design recently won 2024 Muse Design awards for their projects, Dish Dash and Dimono.
The over-arching theme of the curricula is design for interactions, which acknowledges that ‘ecologies’ of products and communications often come together within complex physical and digital environments. Coursework balances making and theory with the integration of new, emergent technologies. Students are encouraged to explore the scope of design as well as the responsibility and ethics involved in the design of interactions between people, the built world, and the environment. Designers are concerned with aesthetics, but they are equally concerned with serving people.
The circus has come to Broadway and the musical team behind it has been clowning around together since their freshman year at Carnegie Mellon University’s School of Drama. But clowning around is serious work for PigPen Theatre Co(opens in new window). This band of storytellers, made up of seven CMU alumni (Alex Falberg, Arya Shahi, Ben Ferguson, Curtis Gillen, Dan Weschler, Matt Nuernberger, and Ryan Melia) has created and produced imaginative musical works that have been performed all over the world. Now, the group is making their Broadway debut as the composers and lyricists of “Water for Elephants(opens in new window),” which opened on March 21 at the Imperial Theatre in New York.
Some people, including those of us at Apple, like having “Masonry” be part of CSS Grid. We believe this functionality is a mechanism to expand CSS Grid — allowing it to finally create columnar grids as well as modular grids. And we want this functionality to be mixed with all the other features of Grid, including the powerful options for defining a columns, track spanning, explicit placement, and subgrid.
