IDeATe collaborates with the Human-Computer Interaction Institute to offer an undergraduate minor in Design for Learning, which is open to students from any major. Students interested in the minor should contact the IDeATe advisor to discuss curriculum and to make a loose plan of study. If you’re the problem-solving and entrepreneurial kind, a boundary-pushing innovator, this is the place for you. In our undergraduate Engineering Design, Innovation and Exploration (EDIE) program, you’ll learn how to generate innovative product and service solutions that solve problems and fulfill needs in today’s world. We believe in allowing you to bring your ideas further by engineering the “vehicle” to make things happen, to bring your product or service to your customers and users.

Research & Practice

Our programs are unified by a framework that contextualizes design, while also seeking to shape the future of the discipline and advance the field as it matures. Our students become "systems thinkers," able to see and solve complex problems in a globally connected and interdependent world. The career possibilities — and your potential to make an impact on the world — are limitless. In addition to research and academic institutions, the university hosts several other educationally driven programs. The Pennsylvania Governor's School for the Sciences, a state-funded summer program that aims to foster interest in science amongst gifted high school students is run on campus every summer.

Educational & Professional Qualifications

We offer information sessions for high school educators looking for more information on the career opportunities that are possible with an education in design. Alongside of focused studies in design, student personal interests can be explored through elective courses within the School of Design or across the University. UI/UX designers, product designers, environment designers, graphic/communication designers, illustrators, biomedical designers, animators, fashion designers, and artists all housed under one department.

Soft Technologies

The School’s state-of-the-art graduate suite has four interconnected spaces that support various work preferences, including an area with individual workspaces, a collaborative space with an enclosed team room, a kitchen and social cafe area, and a distance-learning capable classroom. The graduate suite also features wall-to-wall whiteboards, 50-inch video monitors, dynamic screen-sharing technologies, and teleconference abilities. Design is a highly interactive and transdisciplinary endeavor that is integral to the success of businesses and organizations worldwide.

Adjuncts of Practice

They study the dynamic and ‘emergent’ characteristics of communications in a globally networked society where technologies and modes of individual and mass communication are constantly changing. Students learn systems thinking and engage in an iterative, multi-disciplinary and collaborative design process that involves research, observation, prototyping and rigorous evaluation. Students develop the ability to identify and communicate to specific audiences through effective visual and verbal communications that educate, inform, delight and invite participation. At Carnegie Mellon, you’ll find interdisciplinary thinking woven into the curriculum of every program. But nowhere is this truer than the BXA programs, which combine different academic areas with the arts in inventive, visionary ways.

If we were to add images to each of these articles, it would be it even more dynamic. First, let’s take a look at how to build a classic masonry/waterfall layout. In this gallery of photos, each image is wrapped with a figure element, and the figures are direct children of a main element. Note there’s a control panel for each demo, with the relevant layout code printed to the page. Turn on “Number items” to see the relationship between the HTML order of content and the layout placement of that content. Often, the PigPen men have starred in their shows, playing the instrumentation and telling the stories themselves.

Grades lower than “C” in required Design courses will result in academic probation, suspension, or drop from the School of Design. Instead we could use the name off to convey “please turn off the grid in the row direction, and give me only columns”. Making masonry a simple and separate layout type would avoid the work necessary to keep Grid and Masonry working together in combination — both now and in the long term. Doing this would simplify the layout model, make it easier to implement in browsers, reduce the potential for performance traps, and allow the feature sets of Grid and Masonry to diverge. Either way, it’s clear that advocates of this option want Masonry to be limited to a symmetrical grid — where all the columns are the same size as each other.

There will also be a showcase that will feature all the work students have completed during the program, for fellow classmates, faculty, and parents to see. The goal is consciously speculative and experimental work that is deeply enmeshed with social and environmental concerns, with explicit ties to humanistic and cultural discourses, industry, and contemporary practice. The faculty seek advanced-level projects that will position graduates as future thought leaders in architecture and allied fields relating to advanced fabrication, material performance, construction methodologies, or academia. Students in the Immersive Technologies in Arts & Culture minor will be hybrid technologists, media-makers, and storytellers who can create mediated experiences at the intersection of technology, design and the humanities. They will be equipped with the social consciousness, global awareness, and cross-cultural skills needed to forge positive new paths for immersive media going into the future. In the sonic arts minor, you’ll explore the processes and products of digital sound and music, learning the basic principles of computer music, sound synthesis, spatialization and concepts in sound design.

Engineering Design, Innovation and Entrepreneurship (EDIE) Additional Major

Our curriculum acknowledges that no product exists in isolation—it is always part of a larger system comprised of people, communications and environments. Within the context of design for service, products exist as ‘touchpoints’ in a service ecology. For this reason, students learn systems thinking and engage in an iterative, multi-disciplinary and collaborative design process that involves research, observation, modeling/prototyping and rigorous evaluation. Students study systems thinking; the ability to see and solve problems at multiple levels of scale, and situate their work within larger social and environmental contexts. In this minor, offered by the Human-Computer Interaction Institute, you can combine skills to imagine, design and evaluate effective new media systems for learning environments.

A few lines of code creates a dynamic layout which adds and removes columns one at a time as space allows — without any media/container queries, and with wrapping prevention. However, there are big questions still being asked about how CSS should handle masonry-style layouts. Some people remain skeptical that this capability should be part of CSS Grid, and want it to instead be its own separate display type.

Students in the School of Design are exposed to a broad curriculum and are encouraged to work collaboratively with peers from other disciplines across the university. They become “systems thinkers” who are able to see and solve complex problems in the context of a globally connected and interdependent world. This holistic, design research-based approach positions them to stand out among their peers. Design for interactions is an overarching theme that runs throughout our programs. Born out of research and teaching in the School over the past several decades, it remains a core component of how we approach design education today. Our alums are placed in some of the most desirable positions in the field where they are leading, practicing, researching, or teaching design in small and large organizations worldwide.

Almost everything you experience physically, spatially, visually, or through interactions or services has been designed, including those by alumni of Carnegie Mellon University's School of Design. For nearly three decades Charles Johnson has worked at the intersection of human performance, design, technology and manufacturing creating both analog and digital products for the sports, fashion, active lifestyle and esport sectors. Grids are used to line up text, images and other content in a regular pattern.

Carnegie Mellon's primary athletic rivals are fellow UAA schools Case Western Reserve University and Washington University in St. Louis; the Tartans had an especially intense rivalry with the latter's football team from the 2000s to 2017. Carnegie Mellon also develops cross-disciplinary and university-wide institutes and initiatives to take advantage of strengths in various colleges and departments and develop solutions in critical social and technical problems. To date, these have included the Cylab Security and Privacy Institute, the Wilton E. Scott Institute for Energy Innovation, the Neuroscience Institute, the Simon Initiative, and the Disruptive Healthcare Technology Institute.

The MAAD curriculum offers the flexibility to craft a highly customized path of study rooted in design and research. Admitted candidates may apply for advanced standing based on previous coursework or professional experience, eliminating the first semester, and allowing them to begin studies in the spring term. Qualified candidates must demonstrate a familiarity with the proposed field of study and a high level of design ability. The MAAD program is intended for early- to mid-career professionals who already hold an architecture degree (B.A., B.S., B.Arch, M.Arch, or international equivalent).
